On Thursday, April 23, the Midlothian Rotary Club partnered with the Chesterfield County School Board for our 15th consecutive year in honoring outstanding 2 students in each school for exhibiting respect, responsibility, honesty and accountability. These core values reflect the values of Rotarians who strive to live their lives by the four-way test:
Of the things we think, say and do:
[] Is it the truth?
[] Is it fair to all concerned?
[] Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
[] Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Rotary is the world’s largest civic organization with more than 1.2 million members and 34,000 clubs worldwide. Rotarians are leaders in their community sharing concern for the common good on a local and global scale.
The 2014-‘15 Rotary International theme is inspired by Confucious: “Light Up Rotary.” “The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way is to light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 million Rotarians light one. Together, we light up the world,” explained Gary Huang, President of Rotary International (RI).
In 2014, the Midlothian Rotary Club supported the 28-year effort to eradicate Polio, partnered with other Clubs to purchase medical equipment for a state-of-the-art hospital in Honduras, provided sporting goods to support the worthwhile mission of the Boys’ Home, engaged with Crenshaw Elementary to support a hands-on summer literacy program, and will provide financial support to seven local non-profits that support specific needs in our community.
Rotarians are lighting up their own communities similarly around the world to improve the human condition. Students being honored tonight embody what Rotary is all about – that is why the Midlothian Rotary Club considers this banquet to be such a special event. Core values provide the foundation for success in life, and each Student of the Year has the potential to be a leader and serve as a role model for others.
